Hiking in the Alps - the Elmauer Tor
The climb to the Ellmauer Tor is an absolute classic in the Wilder Kaiser, or the Kaiser Mountains in Tirol. The beautiful walk through the big Kübelkar to the Tor leads through an impressive landscape and offers a magnificent view of the Alps and when the the sky is clear, the Großglockner. The Ellmauer Tor is also the main passage from the Gruttenhütte in the south of the Wilder Kaiser to the Stripsenjochhaus in the north via the Jubiläumssteig.
From the parking area at the Wochenbrunner Alm we first follow the forest road and later a path through some debris to the Gruttenhütte. The first part of the walk is easy and takes ± one hour. After the hut follows a steep descent and then a good kilometer of klettersteig. No fear of heights and a minimal experience with mountain hiking is definitely recommended.
The reward is great when you finally reach the Ellmauer Tor at 1970 m. You can continue to the Stripsenjochhaus in the north. We returned via the Gruttenhütte but followed the wide path that leads right to the hut back to the Wochenbrunner Alm.
For mountain climbers, the Ellmauer Tor offers excellent top goals. Even for non-climbers, the Hintere Goinger Halt is accessible through the Elmauer Tor.
